My biggest productivity tool is that I have two Smart folders in Mail.app. One shows me all my unread emails across all of my email accounts and the other shows me all the messages that I have flagge

First, I go through my unread SmartBox and any emails that I need to respond to I Flag (control+click on your toolbar to edit it and add the Flag/Unflag button for quick access). Once I have processed my unread emails I go to my Flagged SmartBox and start responding.

The reason this works well for me is I can be in sort mode to process all of my unread email and then I can be in reply mode when going through my action items in my flagged SmartBox. I don’t have to change gears going back and forth.
